Τοῖς υἱοῖς Κορε ψαλμὸς ᾠδῆς.
Filiis Core. Psalmus cantici.
NJBC: clearly a Zion hymn despite many obscurities;
Grail: God’s city, mother of all nations. The universalist outlook here is truly astonishing; not that Zion ceases to be the center of the world--this in the psalmist’s perspective will always be so; but to offer the hand of friendship to Babylon and Egypt, the ancient persecutors, is truly magnanimous. It may be, of course, that Jews exiled in those countries are meant; but this would turn the wide and gracious gesture of vv. 4-5 into something clumsy and ungenerous. With this psalm may be compared a passage of the prophet Zechariah (8:20-23, and 14:16) where people from foreign countries “take hold of the robe of a Jew saying ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’” There is a Jew the whole world has heard of, and his surname is Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”
The heavenly Jerusalem is a free woman; she is our mother. (Gal 4,26)

Psalmus Asaph.
NJBC: sacking of temple, probably by the Babylonians in 587 BC; prayer for vengeance on enemies; God’s reputation is at stake: if God does not punish, the nations will conclude that God is helpless
Grail: National lament over the destruction of Jerusalem. Like psalm 75 this one almost certainly refers to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Unlike psalm 75 there is a confession of guilt--the guilt of an earlier generation. It is interesting that this ingredient should enter the solution of the problem of suffering: have these people sinned--or their parents? And indeed we may blame our ancestors for some of our condition, so long as we realize that we may, and do, contribute to the unhappiness of our children. We are the context into which they will be born for better or for worse. But the psalmist evidently does not wish to call God’s attention to the sins of the psalmist’s generation except in passing (v. 9); and there is a further devout ingenuity when (v. 10) the psalmist reminds God of what other people will say if God deserts the people. As if God cared! But such a prayer is very human and no doubt raises a smile in heaven.

Grail: Plea for the return of God’s favor. The theme is much the same as in the preceding psalm, but the scene shifts to the northern kingdom where the axe fell first; Samaria was overrun in 721 BC and colonized with a mixed population of idolatrous immigrants: so many weeds in the garden of God. What has God done to the vineyard? Understandably enough--and other psalms have taught us to expect it--there is no mention of the wild grapes this chosen vine had produced (Is 5:1-7), and the psalmist dares to ask “why?” The prophet Amos could provide the answer; thirty years before this time he had scourged the luxury and oppression of the ruling classes (Am 6:4). But we have to sympathize with our psalmist, who at least has learned the lesson that to brood over sins committed is a worthless exercise.

Grail: The magnificent promises of God. Again, as in psalm 78, the question “why?”--but this time it is not so much the disaster to the kingdom that worries the psalmist as the fate of the Davidic king--perhaps the death at Megiddo of the devout Josiah in 609 BC and the extinction of the dynasty a few years later. If this in fact was the occasion of the psalm we can only the more admire the faith of the psalmist in such hard times. The messianic promise (2 Sam 7) was made by God, as were the heavens; each has the same guarantee: there is no doubt about God’s power and all kingship comes from God (vv. 6-19) so whatever has happened (vv. 39-52) cannot be final. The psalmist was right: “You shall call his name Jesus . . . and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father . . . and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (Lk 1:31)
God has raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of David, the servant. (Lk 1,69)

Oratio Moysi, hominis Dei.
NJBC: national lament or meditation on human mortality; only psalm attributed to Moses; chiastic hymn with birth at the center=maternal tone; ref. to children at end recalls language of birth in v. 2
Grail: Pondering on the brevity of life. The plural pronouns no doubt indicate that this psalm was sung in community, but it surely reads like a national song and the application is surely to the congregation as individuals. The “anger” and “fury” of God (v. 11) have been used before (e.g. ps. 6:2) as a description of the brevity and pain of life. It is always difficult to know how much the Christian’s love of God owes to the revelation of a future life, but certainly we can admire those who loved God without it; as these grew older, we might have thought, their love of God would weaken in proportion since they had less to hope for. But instead it seemed to strengthen. Perhaps this is because the revelation was beginning to dawn already?
There is no time with God; a thousand years, a single day; it is all one. (2 Peter 3,8)

Canticum graduum.
NJBC: royal psalm similar to ps 89, but here the promise to David’s line is conditional, based on obedience to the covenant. 2 sections, 10 lines each, with “David” at beginning and end of each; “glory” of king’s crown contrasts with disgrace of his enemies.
Grail: God’s promise to David: a pilgrimage song. Our Lord came to bring God to earth. For this he worked with unwearying labor, with sweat and even with blood. And the result of his work was not a building, a Temple, but the Church, where God really does dwell, eternally.
The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. (Lk 1,32)

NJBC: V. 3 (the "holy ones") is notoriously difficult. V. 10, "Sheol" gets translated by LXX as "corruption" and is picked up twice in Acts (chs. 2 & 13) with that meaning.
Grail: True happiness. A psalm of confidence. So much lip-service is paid to the one God and so much activity to the gods we make for ourselves. Only thoughtful experience can show how hollow these are: the offerings we make them pay no return but a frenzy to offer more. But perhaps this experience is necessary for most: it may not lead to the high mysticism of the psalmist, but if we learn to turn away and look for a while towards the more lasting Good we may find it more satisfying after all: appetite may grow from what it feeds on. There is even a presentiment in this psalm that such a union with God will prove stronger than death, and in Christ it did. The risen Lord, so closely united with his Father, descended to the place of death and came out freely, ascending with his spoils. Nor can Death resist his Body which is the Church: he promised that the gates of death would not withstand it. Death, "the last enemy," is destroyed: the resurrection of our bodies is guaranteed by the resurrection of Christ.
