Ex Machina

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ex Machina leans heavier on ideas than effects, but it's still a visually polished piece of work -- and an uncommonly engaging sci-fi feature.

Ex Machina | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting ...the brilliance of the film is the way we become Garland’s Turing Test subjects. Rated: 4.5/5 Apr 5, 2024 Full Review Ex Machina | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Kjerstin Johnson Bitch Media I enjoyed watching the small cast of characters conspire with and against one another within the confines of a chillingly beautiful and remote techno-bunker. Jan 27, 2021 Full Review Ex Machina | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Jason Bailey Flavorwire A crackling good entertainment, a brainy science fiction picture executed in a clean, concise style, with a narrative as logical as it is unpredictable. May 28, 2016 Full Review Ex Machina | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Wael Khairy The Cairo Scene “Ex Machina” works as a study of what it means to be conscious/human...I’m convinced more than ever that we are in the midst of a British New Wave in science fiction cinema. Jan 3, 2024 Full Review Ex Machina | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Jordan Brooks Vague Visages A commanding first directorial effort from Alex Garland, Ex Machina is the product of a perfectly-tuned collaborative endeavor, much like the mind of its artificial centerpiece. Aug 3, 2023 Full Review Ex Machina | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Anton Bitel Projected Figures Presenting itself in heavily gendered terms, this sci-fi makes Nathan’s modernist bunker a prison-house of abusive, objectifying patriarchy from which Ava is bent on escaping. Matt Al. Robots. Need I say more? Absolutely loved seeing this in IMAX Laser. Fully packed auditorium. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Kal S I was hooked from the opening minute, and remained so until the closing credits. Masterful acting brings this near faultless thriller to life, dragging you into its frighteningly claustrophobic world. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Robert T Very smart and intense, I never really knew who was telling the truth Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review S S Completely implausible even if scifiNo one locks people *in* their computer controlled home if the power goes out. Humans always have an override power because after all humans programmed the system and smart humans have several backups Come on!!And if he created the bot why did he not program it to save humans?? And not to hate him?? Hated the ending even if Caleb was inconsequential And the helicopter pilot not asking any questions? I like my scifi to still make sense and not insult my intelligence Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review Audience Member 10/10100/100How this movie is not my highly rated is beyond me. This film is utterly incredible. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review D S They constantly show reruns of this movie on HBO and Cinemax. Sonoya Mizuno made her movie debut and looked hot as ever, mainly because she was buck naked. The disco dancing scene was pretty legendary too. Lots of movies and shows have copied that since then. I'm not a big fan of the nerdy guy who won the trip to his compound. But I am a big fan of Oscar Isaac. 4 stars. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review Read all reviews
